The IMarEST, the largest professional body of its kind, conceived the role of ambassador three years ago to align its activities with the crucial aims of the United Nations Ocean Decade. Niru’s tenure will last three years, and he takes over from Dr Stephen da Mora.
Niru’s top priorities include:
- Catalyzing research, innovation, and policy coherence by channeling member expertise.
- Engaging marine professionals as stewards of the ocean, promoting high standards of professional practice and recognition of skills and competence.
- Ensuring equity, inclusivity, and transparency across the marine sector.
- Undertaking advocacy at the highest level and growing partnerships globally.
Niru Dorrian said: “Becoming UN Ocean Decade ambassador is a great responsibility and an immense honor. I hope that my work over the next three years will help the IMarEST make a lasting contribution to the future of our oceans.”

Niru is a marine mammal specialist who has long been instrumental in shaping the future of marine science within IMarEST. He played a pivotal role in establishing the IMarEST Marine Mammal Special Interest Group (MMSIG) in 2020 and has co-chaired the group since, leading numerous outreach and educational initiatives.
His appointment as UN Ocean Decade Ambassador is a unique opportunity for Niru to amplify his lifelong dedication and commitment to ocean conservation and sustainable marine management.
