The rapid growth of the small subsea vehicle market has led to an explosion of sensor technology designed to enable these vehicles to perform longer and more complex missions. Doppler Velocity Logs (DVLs) combined with inertial sensors remain the standard in vehicle navigation systems, but equipping these small vehicles with a multi-sensor navigation system often remains cost- and space-prohibitive.

The Nucleus 1000 from Nortek aims to markedly

improve the navigation capabilities of small vehicles while streamlining integration with an all-in-one navigation sensor package. By offering DVL capabilities alongside a pre-synchronized AHRS or optional INS, the Nucleus brings together all the data streams required for vehicle positioning and navigation in a single compact sensor.

ADVANCED TRACKING & PROFILING

The Nucleus 1000 enables users to add bottom tracking functionality to a small AUV, improving navigation and positioning capabilities without requiring a traditional larger DVL. Despite the instrument’s small footprint, the Nucleus’ bottom track capability is robust and can be relied upon for true autonomous navigation. The Nucleus 1000 offers bottom track capabilities at up to a 50 m range.

Water track is a feature used as a backup when the seabed is out of range. In the case of a Nucleus with an INS license, the Nucleus feeds water track measurements into the INS when bottom track is not available.

The Nucleus 1000 can also collect current profiles, opening doors for applications requiring environmental surveying.

FLEXIBLE FEATURES

The Nucleus 1000 also offers a pre-calibrated, pre-synchronized AHRS or optional INS, alleviating the demands of integration on a vehicle. The optional INS license enables users to view latitude/longitude output for vehicle navigation or perform relative navigation if GNSS initialization is not available.

Two depth rating options (300 m and 1,000 m) make the Nucleus 1000 a flexible option for vehicles of varying demands. The compact size of the Nucleus makes it suitable for even handheld AUVs. Nortek also recently introduced an OEM housing option, enabling easier installation of the Nucleus during vehicle production, reducing overall payload consumed, and removing the need for underwater cables. The OEM housing offers a more streamlined form factor for improved vehicle hydrodynamics.
