A pioneering Scottish floating offshore wind farm is investing in the future of the industry by helping two promising students fund their studies.

Muir Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm has awarded scholarships worth a total of £10,000 to two students who are keen to pursue careers in Scotland’s wind industry.

The recipients are Kieran Craigen and Magomed Sultygov, who are both studying for their Master’s degrees at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.

They are the second pair of students to be awarded the scholarships, which are part of a £30,000 educational partnership between Muir Mhòr and the university.

The initiative is part of the project’s commitment to boosting the skills needed for Scotland’s offshore wind industry through education, starting with pupils while they are still at school.

Muir Mhòr is one of the world’s first commercial-scale floating offshore wind projects, on track to be built off the Aberdeenshire coast, approximately 63km from Peterhead.

Kieran is studying for an MSc in Sustainability & Environmental Studies, while Magomed is studying for an MSc in Offshore Renewable Energy.

Both are passionate about forging careers in the Scottish wind industry, which is at the heart of government plans to make the UK a clean energy superpower.

Kieran Craigen said: “Growing up on Scotland’s coast gave me a deep appreciation for the marine environment, which is why I’m passionate about ensuring offshore wind is developed in a way that protects the ecosystems around it.

“I’m particularly interested in how renewable energy projects can balance the urgent need for clean energy with the responsibility to protect wildlife and marine habitats.

“Scotland has an incredible opportunity to lead the world in offshore wind development, and projects like Muir Mhòr show how technology and sustainability can work together to support that transition.

“Receiving this scholarship is hugely encouraging, and allows me to focus more fully on my studies while exploring how I can contribute to the responsible development of offshore wind in Scotland.”

Magomed Sultygov said, “Receiving the Muir Mhòr scholarship has made a genuine difference to me.

“It has taken a lot of financial pressure off, and allowed me to focus more on my studies and research in offshore renewable energy, rather than balancing as many working hours alongside university.

“It also means a lot to be supported by an organization that is actively involved in offshore wind. It makes what I’m studying feel directly connected to the real projects and challenges happening in the industry.

“The scholarship has strengthened my motivation to continue developing my skills and pursue a career in offshore wind, where I hope to contribute to the future of renewable energy in Scotland.”

David Hinshelwood, Project Director for Muir Mhòr Offshore Wind Farm, said: “We would like to congratulate to Kieran and Magomed on securing these scholarships, which we hope will serve them well as they forge their careers in the industry.

“The floating offshore wind sector is rapidly evolving, driven by cutting-edge technology and the vital need to secure clean energy for generations to come.

“Muir Mhòr is deeply committed to nurturing the Scottish offshore wind workforce, and our ongoing partnership with the University of Strathclyde embodies that mission.

“By investing in emerging talent today, we are also helping to ensure that Scotland and the UK capitalizes on the immense economic opportunities presented by the green energy transition.

“With Muir Mhòr on track to become one of the world’s first commercial-scale floating offshore wind farms, we are excited to support those who will shape our industry’s future.”

Hannah Johnston, Head of Philanthropy at the University of Strathclyde, said: “The University of Strathclyde prioritizes partnerships with organizations whose vision and mission aligns with our own.

“This improves the learning experiences of our students, who benefit from frontline knowledge and networks, and also accelerates solutions for broader societal impact.

“Muir Mhor Offshore Wind Farm is an ideal partner for Strathclyde across these objectives.

“We are thrilled that the company is investing in student talent—and in turn the future of renewable energy in Scotland—through these scholarships, which will significantly help the deserving recipients achieve academic and career success.”
