Ocean Exchange is a unique ocean tech accelerator that hosts an annual startup pitch competition to recognize and advance innovation in technologies for the health of our oceans and the Blue Economy. As an exclusive media partner, Ocean News & Technology looks back at past Ocean Exchange finalists and shares brief updates on where they are now.

Salient Predictions was founded in 2019 by Matt Stein, Dr. Ray Schmitt, and his sons.  Salient Predictions combines newly discovered weather predictability in ocean variables with advanced machine learning techniques to deliver more accurate and reliable weather forecasting. They were a finalist at Ocean Exchange in 2022.

Since Ocean Exchange, they have been advancing the field of probabilistic, energy-focused weather forecasting through their B2B subscription forecasting service. They have continued to demonstrate strong commercial traction with customers in hydrology and energy seeking greater accuracy in resiliency planning for significant weather events. Agriculture, energy, insurance, offshore wind farms, and ships at sea can all greatly benefit from their forecasts.

From 2022 to present, they have raised approximately $11.9 million through a combination of venture capital funding and non-dilutive grants.  They were recently named the second fastest growing startup in New England by the Boston Globe.

Winning Formula: As an academic, it was very satisfying to see our oceanographic research become useful for long-range weather prediction. Producing something that makes customers happy is not something you normally encounter in scientific research. So when you see that opportunity and feel the entrepreneurial urge, I recommend that you take the plunge,” said Dr. Ray Schmitt.
