The growing importance of subsea power cables, data connections, and pipelines has increased the need for persistent monitoring and rapid detection of anomalies. Autonomous surface and underwater systems offer an effective complement to traditional maritime assets, enabling continuous operations in complex offshore environments.
Integrated USV and AUV Operations
Within the collaboration, Lobster Robotics contributes its expertise in autonomous underwater vehicles, while DEMCON unmanned systems focuses on autonomous surface vessels, system integration, and scalable production. The combined system is designed to operate as a coordinated fleet, with USVs and AUVs sharing data and tasks to maintain an up‑to‑date picture of underwater infrastructure and seabed conditions.
Operating as an integrated system, autonomous vessels can act as a force multiplier by taking over routine inspection and monitoring tasks. This allows naval and coastguard assets to focus on mission‑critical operations and intervention when required
Supporting Maritime Resilience in the North Sea
Both companies are based in the Netherlands and are active in civil and defense‑related maritime technology. From the Port of The Hague, with direct access to the North Sea, DEMCON unmanned systems and Lobster Robotics will test and further develop their joint capabilities. The location provides access to offshore test areas and innovation ecosystems focused on maritime security and autonomy.
“Our goal is to deliver autonomous systems that are operationally relevant and scalable,” said Stephan Rutten, CEO of Lobster Robotics. “By combining surface and underwater autonomy, we can significantly enhance long‑term situational awareness of critical underwater assets.”
Fedor Ester, Managing Director of DEMCON unmanned systems, added: “Autonomous surface vessels and underwater drones are becoming an essential part of protecting critical maritime infrastructure. This collaboration allows us to further develop integrated solutions that can operate reliably in demanding offshore conditions.”
Both companies are engaged with defense‑oriented innovation programs and testing facilities to ensure that technological development aligns with real operational needs. From 2027 onwards, DEMCON unmanned systems and Lobster Robotics aim to provide joint services for the inspection and protection of critical underwater infrastructure.
