Austal USA Delivers First LCU 1700-Class Vessel to US Navy

Austal USA has delivered LCU 1710, marking the first LCU 1700-class vessel ever delivered to the US Navy. This is also a historic milestone for the company as this is Austal USA's first steel ship delivered to the Navy.

“The delivery of LCU 1710 represents a major achievement for Austal USA and our shipbuilding team,” said Gene Miller, President of Austal USA. “As our first Landing Craft Utility and first steel ship delivered to the US Navy, this accomplishment reflects the dedication and expertise of our workforce and our industry partners. It also demonstrates Austal USA’s ability to skillfully design, build and deliver highly complex steel vessels while continuing to support the Navy’s evolving mission requirements.”

Prior to delivery, LCU 1710 successfully completed acceptance trials, which included comprehensive testing of the ship’s major systems and equipment to demonstrate operational performance, reliability, and compliance with Navy requirements. Throughout the trials, the US Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) validated the quality of construction and mission readiness.

“The successful completion of these trials reflects exceptional planning, flawless execution, dedication, and the collaboration of our shipbuilding team and Navy counterparts,” said Mike Pruitt, Vice President of Surface Ship Programs at Austal USA. “Our entire organization played a principal role in achieving these milestones, paving the way for delivery to the US Navy.”

The vessel also demonstrated the ability to get underway without the assistance of tugs or pilots and validated its limited crew operating capability, further establishing the operational flexibility and performance of the LCU 1700-class design. The successful completion of these rigorous testing events further highlights Austal USA’s growing expertise in steel ship construction and complex vessel integration.

LCU 1710 is designed to transport equipment and personnel from ship to shore in support of expeditionary operations. The platform provides enhanced capability, endurance, and survivability compared to legacy LCUs.

In addition to the LCU program, Austal USA continues to expand its portfolio of steel and aluminum shipbuilding programs. The company currently has multiple vessels under construction and continues to support submarine module production and auxiliary ship programs for the US Navy and Coast Guard.
