TAKE 5: The ON&T Interview with General Oceans

General Oceans was founded in 2021 and, in the relatively short time since, has established itself as an industry-leading innovator within the ocean technology. Backed by over 30 years of experience and expertise in pioneering underwater technology platforms, the company specializes in the design and manufacture of products that meaningfully enhance the operational efficiency and effectiveness of ocean professionals in the field.

General Oceans’ mission is to “Empower the Blue Economy Through Advanced Ocean Technology,” but leadership understands that this is ultimately a people-first business—the team, which continues to grow following a series of key acquisitions, is the Group’s greatest strength. So, this month we sat down with the General Oceans Founder and President Atle Lohrmann, a stalwart in the oceanographic sensor space since 1999, to find out more.

1. Tell us a little bit about the overall vision driving the immediate success of General Oceans in recent years…

General Oceans’ vision is to become the leading global group in ocean technology by uniting innovative companies that share a passion for exploring, understanding, and preserving the world’s oceans.

Through consolidation in a fragmented industry, General Oceans aims to create a resilient and agile organization that delivers advanced, reliable solutions for marine exploration, defense, offshore energy, and environmental monitoring. The company prioritizes longterm sustainability, cross-company collaboration, and technological innovation to support ocean stewardship while driving growth.

2. How has the leadership team targeted some of the more recent strategic acquisitions in the ocean tech sector?

The leadership team has pursued a focused acquisition strategy, targeting companies with strong regional footholds, niche technologies, and complementary expertise.

RS Aqua, for example, was acquired for its leadership in the UK market and its robust distribution network for ocean sensors. Similarly, the acquisitions of Tritech and Klein Marine Systems brought in advanced sonar and navigation capabilities that strengthened the group’s technology portfolio.

Each acquisition is chosen not just for its standalone performance, but for its ability to collaborate within the group—leveraging shared development resources, cross-selling opportunities, and unified go-to-market strategies.

3. With recent advancements in underwater technology, how do customers pick the most suitable product?

In a fast-evolving field, customers should prioritize product reliability, data accuracy, integration capability, and the supplier’s track record of support and innovation.

General Oceans offers a unique advantage in that its portfolio combines the specialized expertise of several long-established brands. This allows customers to access best-in-class products tailored to their specific needs—whether for scientific research, underwater navigation, or defense applications—with the confidence of responsive service, proven performance, and the backing of a financially strong group.

4. Define General Oceans’ unique selling proposition in an increasingly competitive commercial landscape…

General Oceans offers a rare combination of technical depth, global reach, and operational autonomy within a collaborative framework. Unlike many fragmented providers, General Oceans unites six specialized companies under one strategic umbrella—each maintaining entrepreneurial agility while benefiting from shared R&D, international infrastructure, and commercial synergies.

This approach enables the group to deliver integrated solutions, reduce time-to-market, and support clients across a wide range of subsea applications. In short, General Oceans brings the scale of a group and the responsiveness of a specialist.

5. What do you think the immediate future holds for the rapidly-evolving marine instrumentation industry?

The marine instrumentation industry is poised for substantial growth, driven by factors such as the expansion of offshore wind, the increasing demand for autonomous vehicles (ROVs and AUVs), heightened defense spending, and growing global attention on ocean health. Advances in miniaturization, sensor fusion, and real-time analytics will redefine product capabilities.

The industry will also see increased convergence between software and hardware, creating opportunities for smarter, more automated systems.

Companies that can provide integrated, interoperable, and sustainable solutions—backed by credible service and global support—will lead the next phase of growth.

General Oceans is well-positioned to play a central role in this future.
