Led by Indra, the SMAUG (Smart Maritime And Underwater Guardian) project focuses on developing advanced technologies for enhanced harbor surveillance. The Maritime Robotics team is contributing by refining their sonar data pipeline and data handling processes while integrating state-of-the-art drone technology for comprehensive maritime domain awareness.
Enhanced Harbor Surveillance with Tethered Drone Technology
One of the most significant advancements Maritime Robotics is working on is the integration of a tethered UAV system from Elistair, a leading French drone company, onto their uncrewed surface vehicles (USVs). This technology will enable persistent and dynamic aerial surveillance of harbor areas not currently under regular surveillance. The fusion of sonar data processing with real-time drone footage will provide a more comprehensive security framework, enhancing the ability of port authorities and maritime operators to detect, identify, and respond to potential threats.
Strengthening Maritime Security
Maritime Robotics’ work within the SMAUG project will deliver multiple security-enhancing benefits. Integrated Elistair tethered drone systems will provide continuous, 24/7 surveillance, while an improved sonar data pipeline will strengthen underwater threat detection. Combining aerial and underwater data will enhance situational awareness, enabling more efficient threat response. Finally, USVs equipped with tethered drones will ensure scalable and flexible deployment that is adaptable to diverse harbor environments. These innovations will be an important advance in maritime safety and security, reinforcing Europe’s commitment to protecting critical infrastructure against potential underwater threats.
