Offshore Wind Decommissioning Seminar, 26 – 27 February 2019

According to a report published by the UK’s Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy last year, the collective cost of decommissioning the UK’s offshore wind farms could amount to as much as £3.6 billion.

This figure applies to the 37 offshore wind farms currently operational or under development in the UK. But with offshore wind capacity in the UK set to double over the next decade, costs will certainly rise. Across Europe, the total outlay required will be even greater.

As a ‘green’ industry there are high expectations for offshore wind to take a sustainable approach to its decommissioning plans. Reusing and recycling materials is as an important consideration, as is supporting marine ecosystems by minimising the disturbance caused by decommissioning operations.

The task of decommissioning the North Sea’s ageing oil & gas installations has unearthed some key learnings for offshore wind, motivating a more proactive approach which considers the end of asset life cycle during the project planning and design stages.

Project developers will also need to ensure compliance with one of a patchwork of different permitting and licensing processes that apply across different European jurisdictions.

Taking place on February 26th – 27th 2019, the Offshore Wind Decommissioning seminar is the first and only event to directly address the opportunities and challenges involved with decommissioning offshore wind installations.

The agenda encompasses the regulatory, legal, technical and sustainability issues involved with decommissioning projects, providing a thoroughgoing examination of the topic suitable for energy companies, regulators, consultancies, engineering firms, turbine manufacturers and OSV owners alike.
