The AEU Safety Awards program recognizes the strongest safety programs in the maritime industry. The AEU is the leading provider of workers’ compensation for waterfront employers and presents the AEU Safety Awards each year to the best performing American Longshore Mutual Association (ALMA) members nationwide.
Eligibility for the awards is based on the frequency and severity of workers’ compensation accidents for the prior calendar year, as well as safety-related metrics determined by AEU’s loss control team.
Included in the Safety Award criteria is the AEU Safety BenchmarkTM, a proprietary loss control measurement that reflects the major components of a company’s safety management program.
Bo Ristic, vice president of safety, strategy and quality, Chet Morrison Contractors, said, “Out of more than 1200 ALMA members, only nine safety awards were distributed for 2017 by AEU and Chet Morrison Contractors was placed top of our category. We are very proud of this award as it recognizes our commitment to safety and fostering a safer, smarter workforce and workplace.”
Jimmy Burgin, senior vice president and director of loss control at AEU, commented, “This year’s winners have demonstrated impressive commitment to safety initiatives. Their management teams, supervisors, safety staff and employees all combine to create safety programs that are worthy of the AEU Safety Award.”
While there are many safety award programs managed by various industry or trade associations in maritime and other industries nationwide, the AEU believes the criteria used in the AEU Safety Award program are the most effective in measuring not only accident prevention performance, but also specific management-based controls.
