Renowned Research Center Highlights Industry’s Role in Ocean and Climate Science

The National Oceanography Centre (NOC) has announced a new ambassador partnership with eight experts from a broad range of industries who will support and promote its vital work in understanding the planet’s oceans and their role in regulating and sustaining the planet.

The industry experts come from a diverse range of sectors including science, sport, fashion, and television, and will actively promote the work of the NOC’s scientists in order to reach new audiences noc logo full colourand raise the profile of the NOC’s vital work into ocean research. The ambassadors all share a common goal in being passionate about the ocean and will help the NOC reach more people who can in turn play their part in protecting the ocean and the planet.

Commenting on the NOC’s new ambassador program, Sofie Bennett, Head of Philanthropy at the National Oceanography Centre, said: “As we face a dramatic decline in the health of our ocean and climate, we must all work together to find scientific solutions to the issues that affect our environment, our health, and our future. As the UK’s leading ocean science charity, we have teamed up with our new ambassadors who share our values and will help us to reach more people and ensure that we all play our part in protecting the ocean and planet. We are really excited to be working with the ambassadors who will help to highlight our scientific projects to a wider and more diverse audience.”

The NOC’s new eight ambassadors are:

  • Dee Caffari, MBE, is the only woman to have sailed solo, non-stop around the world in both directions and six times in total becoming one of the most successful and recognized British offshore sailors
  • Megan McCubbin, a zoologist and science communicator, who is also a wildlife TV presenter who has co-presented popular shows including Springwatch, Autumnwatch and Winterwatch on BBC Two
  • Dr Helen Czerski, a physicist and oceanographer who is currently working as an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University College London
  • Gaia Vince a science writer and broadcaster who is exploring the effects between human systems and the planet
  • Benhilda Mlambo an esteemed fashion designer and entrepreneur who is demonstrating that luxury can be impact-free. Benhilda has published a book about sustainable design
  • Mhairi McCann, who is the founder and CEO of Youth STEM 2030 and is on a mission to empower young people around the world to use STEM to tackle the biggest challenges the world faces
  • Assad Razzouk, author, and host of The Angry Clean Energy Guy Podcast. Along with running clean energy company Gurīn Energy, Assad also runs a not-for-profit Singapore start-up that digitizes and democratizes renewable energy
  • Julian Hector who is best known for his roles as a prominent British television and Radio producer. He was previously Head of the BBC Natural History Unit

The new ambassadors will carry out a wide range of activity to support the NOC and create more awareness for key projects through their own channels and audiences. This will include attending key industry events hosted by the NOC and appearing as special guests on the NOC’s popular podcast ‘Into the Blue’ – which explores all elements of ocean research from microplastics, technology develop to ocean observations and more.
