Survitec’s Seahaven Shortlisted for Safety at Sea Awards

Survitec’s Seahaven concept has been nominated in the Safety at Sea Awards

Survitec’s pioneering approach to safety within the maritime industry has been recognized by industry experts with two of its innovative products being shortlisted for the Safety at Sea awards.

The leading maritime safety partner was delighted to learn that Seahaven, a mass evacuation system for cruiseships, and Foam Buddy, a foam-containing backpack for use in fighting deck fires, have been shortlisted in two different categories.

Survitec’s Marketing Manager Hannah Burywood said: “We are thrilled that our products have been nominated for a prestigious Safety at Sea Award. We highly value Safety at Sea’s recognition of these products as important to improving maritime safety. As a safety partner for many companies within the maritime industry, we know that it is essential to continue to push the boundaries and look for new, better ways to protect lives at sea.”

Seahaven has been nominated in the Best Emerging Safety Solution category, which identifies new products that show great promise to improving maritime safety. The revolutionary mass evacuation system featuring inflatable lifeboats accessed via slides has been developed for the cruise industry. It is the largest capacity evacuation system available, with one Seahaven system carrying 1,060 persons to safety, with 530 persons in each craft. With multiple slides aiding quick evacuation for both able and disabled persons, it also allows families to descend as a group, reducing stress during the evacuation process.

At the flick of a switch crews can deploy Seahaven in around four minutes, due to its ergonomic and easy launching system that does away with conventional davits. It also has a smaller footprint of up to 85% over conventional live-saving appliances (LSA).

Stew Gregory, Vice President, Innovation, Survitec, said: “We believe that Seahaven is a totally different way of looking at mass evacuation and is based on years of research, developed expertise and numerous conversations with our shipping company partners. When we officially introduce it to market Seahaven will offer a real way of tackling the ongoing concerns of mass evacuation at sea, which has long been a conversation at IMO.”

2 BackPack BackFoam Buddy, a foam-containing backpack for use in fighting deck fires

Foam Buddy, a unique backpack in which to carry fire-fighting foam, has also been shortlisted, in the fire-fighting category for Best Safety Product of the Year.

Foam Buddy allows first responders to fight fires on the open decks of oil & chemical tankers more efficiently, without having to lug cumbersome drums to different locations.

“We are delighted that the nominating panel saw the merits of this piece of equipment. Crews are trained to fight deck fires onboard but it can be a dangerous activity when you have to lug AFF canisters around. Foam Buddy helps make their job easier and safer.”

The Safety at Sea Awards winners will be announced at a dinner in London on 10 September.
