The drilling contractor operates the most modern and sophisticated fleet of drilling rigs and drillships in the business, servicing the largest and most demanding energy companies in the world. In order to stay at the forefront of quality and customer satisfaction, the leading drilling contractors need to ensure that the opportunities offered by the latest technology are leveraged.
As the drill fleet operates in remote areas offshore while also frequently relocating, having access to fast and reliable connectivity solutions is a critical factor, but it is also one of the most complex pieces of the puzzle. Tampnet will provide a ‘connectivity mix’ in order to provide the most optimal experience while utilizing the latest in technology, such as Low Earth Orbit satellites (LEO) and 5G, and leveraging its subsea fiber network when possible. In addition, Tampnet will also provide 5G coverage on the rigs, both indoors and outdoors, along with network management, operations, and monitoring through its renowned Network Operations Centers (NOCs) in Europe and the US.
“This is a massive win for us, and we will deliver the services with our trademark; superior customer satisfaction,” said Elie Hanna, CEO of Tampnet. “The global energy companies are leveraging new technologies, digitalization, and AI to improve safety, minimize their carbon footprint, and maximize efficiencies. This is all adding to the demands and criticality of their communication networks. Key providers of drilling and exploration services to these demanding customers have no choice but to follow suit to meet their current expectations.”
This award represents a major milestone in Tampnet’s Connected Rig business segment, started about 18 months ago. The idea being to leverage Tampnet’s current infrastructure, organization, expertise and industry experience, coupled with the ongoing technology disruptions, to become a best-in-class provider to the highly demanding offshore drilling market.
Tampnet’s subsea fiber infrastructure and 5G coverage in the Gulf of Mexico also provide connectivity and coverage to FirstNet, the US public safety network. By building additional 5G coverage on the drillships working in the Gulf of Mexico, the drilling contractor in question will also become a major contributor to increased FirstNet coverage and improved safety for its crew and the general public.
