The USS Lexington, one of the first aircraft carriers built and commissioned by the United States of America, was sunk during the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942 off the coast of Australia. The wreckage was discovered in approximately 3,000 meters of water. EdgeTech side scan sonar systems provide operators the ability to image large areas of the sea floor during important deep-water searches when the whereabouts of sunken objects are largely unknown. EdgeTech’s unique side scan sonar frequency pairings such as 75 / 230 kHz provide the ability to image over a 2,000 meter swath as researchers conduct search patters in deep waters. The discovery of the USS Lexington comes less than one year after the discovery of the USS Indianapolis. EdgeTech takes great pride in knowing it’s high quality, reliable underwater acoustic imaging systems continue to assist in these historical endeavors.
