James Fisher Subtech to Provide Diving Support at UK Nuclear Power Station

JF Subtech’s UK CalMar Civils Team

James Fisher Subtech (JF Subtech), provider of specialist technical marine support to the renewables, oil and gas, civil works and salvage markets, and part of James Fisher and Sons plc, has been awarded a contract with EDF to undertake diving works at its Sizewell B Nuclear Power Station based in Suffolk, England. The delivery of subsea inspection and maintenance services from a locally based facility will support the continued safe and efficient operation of EDF’s critical energy infrastructure.

The diving and marine project is part of Sizewell B’s planned 2023 outage, due to commence February 2023, and consists of four weeks of marine inspection, maintenance and repair services within the power station and with associated marine infrastructure.

In line with EDF’s commitment to supporting and investing in the communities within the Suffolk region, the project will be led by JF Subtech’s Lowestoft based project management, diving and logistics teams providing responsive local support.

This is the third outage, and sixth project, which JF Subtech has provided civils and inshore diving support to Sizewell B, demonstrating the long term relationship in place.

Robert Gunn, Sizewell B station director, said: “Sizewell B is delighted to be working with James Fisher Subtech’s Lowestoft team once again. The maintenance work we safely complete with our partners ensures the high performance the station is known for.”

Gregg Powell MSc PGCE, civils diving sales manager, JF Subtech commented: “We are delighted to be working once more with EDF at Sizewell B. Supporting local energy infrastructure, and energy security, is of utmost importance to us and our technical expertise in the civils diving arena has been a driving factor in this successful award win.”

“Having supported EDF since 2017, we are experienced with conducting maintenance works at Sizewell B which means our local team has in depth technical knowledge of the site in terms of both layout and specific hazards. Our track record of successfully conducting safe operations at the site has also been a contributing factor to this award win.”

JF Subtech is proud to support customers across the full energy mix and has extensive experience supporting the nuclear industry with subsea inspection and maintenance services, including five marine pipeline and marine buoy project inspection and repair works at Arish Mell. JF Subtech has completed eight projects for EDF on its nuclear assets in England since 2016.

Based on the Suffolk coast, Sizewell B nuclear power station is the UK’s only Pressurised Water Reactor. Nuclear power stations complete regular maintenance, at Sizewell B this is usually at 18-month intervals, to ensure safe and efficient operations. These regularly scheduled power outages allow remedial, and maintenance works to be conducted.
