The Underwater Centre Provides MSc Students with a Deeper Understanding of Working Subsea

The Underwater Centre is working with Robert Gordon University (RGU)’s School of Engineering to incorporate a commercial diving familiarization course as part of the recently introduced MSc in Subsea Engineering one year full time course.

The Centre will deliver theoretical sessions covering diving physics, diving physiology, gases and diving systems, and diving regulations, using the extensive facilities and subsea equipment available in Fort William.

The first intake of students visited the Centre in Fort William last month to complete the week-long course, ‘Humans in the Ocean’.

Each day began with classroom based theoretical training sessions before visiting the Centre’s various dive sites including the surface supplied Nitrox and surface supplied diving sites, and finally the saturation diver training barge.

The students also toured the Centre’s recompression chamber facility and ROV training spread. This practical exposure reinforced the theoretical training making it a unique learning experience for RGU’s students.

The Masters in Subsea Engineering is aimed at engineers who already have some relevant offshore oil and gas experience and high caliber graduates who wish to enhance their employability in the subsea industry.

A broad range of topics are covered, including well engineering and topside processing facilities, as well as the core areas of subsea engineering including: subsea systems, subsea control, pipelines and risers, corrosion and subsea reliability.

Rob Collins, Training and Logistics Co-ordinator at the RGU Oil & Gas Centre, School of Engineering, said: “We are delighted to be working with The Underwater Centre to help bring the world of subsea engineering alive for our MSc students. The feedback that we have had from the first students attending the Centre has been really positive and it is great for them to be able to experience the practical side of what we are teaching on the course. “

Steve Ham, Commercial Director of The Underwater Centre, added: “We are really pleased to be working with RGU to help their MSc in Subsea Engineering students gain a greater understanding of the challenges involved in working subsea. We hope to have made a positive contribution to the subsea work they will eventually be doing.

“We are keen to increase the links between university education and the more practical training we deliver and we look forward to developing the assistance we can offer RGU across both diving and ROV disciplines.“

The Underwater Centre is a purpose-built subsea training and trials facility and is based on the shore of a seawater loch, well sheltered by the surrounding mountains. The Centre’s unique location allows it to provide year-round training and testing in a tidal, open-water environment with access to depths of over 100 meters.

On site there is a large range of vessels and equipment and a committed team of expert staff and instructors helping to make subsea training, testing or research work especially for the customer. It is the ideal location to perform realistic and industry-like training while still being centrally located in the largest town in the Scottish Highlands.
