SEA-ME-WE 5 Cable System Lands in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia & Tokyo, Japan – January 7, 2016

NEC Corporation (NEC; TSE: 6701) announced that Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) and NEC successfully completed the landing of the South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 5 (SEA-ME-WE 5) submarine cable system at Melaka, Malaysia.

Upon completion in 2016, the 20,000 km cable system will provide 24 Terabits per second (Tbit/s) of capacity utilizing the latest 100Gbit/s coherent transmission technology via a fiber optic path between South East Asia, the Middle East and Europe, with connections to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Djibouti, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the Republic of Turkey, Italy and France.

NEC is in charge of deploying the segment spanning from Singapore to Sri Lanka, including the Malaysia branch, where the shore end cable successfully landed in Melaka on October 30, 2015.
