On April 28, Taihan announced that it had won a project to supply extra-high-voltage submarine cables for a solar power generation project in Sinan County, Jeollanam-do, South Korea.
The project is designed to transmit electricity generated by the Bigeum Solar Power Plant and the Dogo Floating Solar Power Plant to the Anjwa Substation. Under the contract, Taihan will supply Topsolar Group, the EPC contractor responsible for the overall power plant construction, with 154 kV-class extra-high-voltage submarine cables, joints, and all related materials, while also carrying out installation.
The submarine cable system will serve as grid interconnection infrastructure linking island power networks and is expected to contribute to the efficient utilization of renewable energy through stable power transmission.
This project is particularly significant as it marks the first collaboration between Taihan and its specialized submarine cable installation subsidiary, Taihan Ocean Works.
Taihan plans to manufacture the submarine cables at Submarine Cable Plant 1 in Dangjin, while Taihan Ocean Works will be responsible for transportation and cable laying. Through this project, the company aims to showcase its total solution capabilities and realize synergies across the value chain by executing the entire process in an integrated manner, spanning manufacturing, transportation, and installation. Taihan Ocean Works is a specialized marine installation company acquired by Taihan in July last year to strengthen its submarine cable installation competitiveness.
With this project, along with a series of major contract wins such as the Yeonggwang–Nakwol project, Taihan continues to strengthen its position in the market. The company has also been selected by the Korean government as a lead operator under its Supply Chain Stabilization Initiative in the submarine cable sector, further expanding its role as a key player in the supply chain.
Taihan is currently constructing its second submarine cable plant, which will be capable of producing 640 kV HVDC submarine cables, while also reviewing plans to secure an additional cable-laying vessel. Through these efforts, the company is simultaneously expanding its manufacturing and installation capabilities and further enhancing its competitiveness for participation in large-scale domestic and international projects, including South Korea’s West Coast Energy Highway initiative, a major power transmission project linked to the expansion of offshore wind generation along the western coast.
A Taihan official stated, “As this project with Topsolar Group marks our first project to be executed in cooperation with our subsidiary, we will devote our full capabilities to ensuring its successful completion. Based on our proven technological expertise and installation capabilities, we will continue to strengthen our position in the global submarine cable market as a total solution provider.”
