Taihan Cable & Solution, led by CEO Jongmin Song, announced that it signed separate Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with Belgium’s Jan De Nul and the Netherlands’ Boskalis for cooperation in the HVDC submarine cable business at the Korea-EU Energy Transition Partnership Forum, held in Brussels, Belgium, on June 10, local time.
The forum was hosted by Korea’s Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, led by Minister Kim Sung-hwan, on the occasion of President Lee Jae-myung’s state visit to the European Union. It was organized to expand strategic cooperation opportunities in the European market, where the renewable energy-led energy transition and the expansion of power grid infrastructure are accelerating.
The forum was attended by Minister Kim Sung-hwan of the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, as well as representatives from Korea Electric Power Corporation, the Korea Power Exchange, and major Korean energy companies. Key European power companies, transmission and distribution system operators, EPC companies, and marine infrastructure firms, including Siemens, RWE, and TenneT, also participated. Representing Taihan, Vice Chairman Jongmin Song attended the forum and discussed cooperation opportunities in energy transition and power infrastructure with major domestic and international industry leaders.
At the forum, Taihan was the only Korean company to sign MOUs, establishing a solid foundation for practical business cooperation. This is viewed as a recognition of Taihan’s competitiveness and credibility as a partner capable of collaborating with leading global companies in power infrastructure, including submarine cables.
Taihan’s MOU partners, Jan De Nul and Boskalis, are globally competitive companies in offshore wind, marine infrastructure, and submarine cable installation. Leveraging their extensive experience and specialized capabilities in large-scale offshore energy projects, the two companies are pursuing a wide range of businesses across Europe and other global markets.
Through the agreements with the two companies, Taihan plans to expand cooperation in HVDC submarine cables and related infrastructure while jointly exploring new business opportunities in the energy transition market. By combining Taihan’s total solution capabilities, covering cable manufacturing, installation, and project execution, with the partners’ expertise in marine infrastructure, Taihan expects to further strengthen its business competitiveness in the domestic and global HVDC submarine cable markets.
“Through the Korea-EU Energy Transition Partnership Forum, we have created an opportunity to strengthen cooperative relationships with leading European companies and secure new growth drivers in the global market,” said Vice Chairman Jongmin Song. “In particular, we expect these agreements to contribute to enhancing the global competitiveness of Korea’s power and energy industries, strengthening technological and business capabilities in HVDC power grids as critical infrastructure, and expanding the role and presence of Korean companies in the global market.”
He added, “Based on our accumulated technological expertise, quality competitiveness, and global network, Taihan will continue to expand business opportunities in the global submarine cable and power infrastructure markets.”
Meanwhile, Taihan has been continuously strengthening its competitiveness in the HVDC submarine cable business. The company is currently constructing its second submarine cable plant in Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do, which will be capable of producing 640kV-class HVDC cables. Following PALOS, Korea’s only cable-laying vessel, Taihan also recently secured the 10,000-ton-class CLV Skandi Connector, further expanding its installation capabilities. By advancing its turnkey execution capabilities across production, transportation, and installation, Taihan is accelerating its expansion into the global submarine power grid market.
