The Hammerhead mine system provides the US Navy with a next-generation, anti-submarine weapon designed for deployment at intermediate and deep-water depths.

The Hammerhead system represents a significant step forward in providing the fleet with an undersea capability that denies adversaries access across surface and subsurface domains. This contract reflects our commitment to delivering advanced, reliable capabilities that give our warfighters a decisive edge in complex and contested maritime environments,” continued Hooks.
Work will begin in August and continue through late 2028, performed primarily at the General Dynamics UUV Manufacturing and Assembly Center of Excellence in Taunton, Massachusetts, with fabrication support from the company’s Greensboro, North Carolina facility. This contract modification was issued by the Portfolio Acquisition Executive (PAE) Maritime.
This production contract supports the continued growth of the General Dynamics Taunton workforce, adding 30 new full-time positions across manufacturing, engineering, and associated support functions—expanding the program team to more than 100 employees, with the majority of positions in Massachusetts and the remainder in North Carolina.
General Dynamics has made significant and sustained investments in its Taunton facility to support this effort and future undersea programs. The UUV Manufacturing and Assembly Center of Excellence, established in 2021, is housed within a 500,000 square-foot complex featuring purpose-built manufacturing cells and specialized test equipment designed to optimize UUV production and deliver scalable capacity. This infrastructure positions Taunton as General Dynamics’ premier site for Hammerhead production and ensures the facility is equipped to produce advanced undersea systems built not only for today’s requirements, but for the next generation of undersea programs.
