Brazil’s environmental regulator Ibama has authorized Petrobras to drill three new wells in block FZA-M-59, in the Foz do Amazonas Basin.

The approval follows a technical report in which the agency found no environmental impediments to the campaigns.

The license covers the Manga, PAD Morpho, and Crotalus wells and permits operation from one of two offshore units, ODN-II (NS-42) or Amaralina Star (NS-43). Simultaneous operation of both units is prohibited.

Deployment of Amaralina Star hinges on prior proof of adjustments to its cuttings-collection systems, subject to inspection by the environmental agency.

Among the license conditions, Petrobras must submit to Ibama, within 30 days of receiving authorization, an updated drilling schedule along with a consolidation of the environmental plans and projects approved throughout the process.

The company must also report the actual start and end dates for each well’s drilling within five days of each event.

The license bars at-sea disposal of drill cuttings from the “reservoir phase”—where the main oil reserve sits—as well as cuttings from shallower reservoirs with confirmed oil presence.

Formation testing at the wells is contingent on proof that the offshore unit has installed a treatment plant for produced water and other oily effluents, pending a prior technical inspection.

Petrobras must also carry out a series of previously approved environmental plans and projects, including an individual emergency plan, a project to monitor the impact of platforms and vessels on birdlife, a plan for the prevention and control of exotic species, a social communication project, an environmental education project for workers, a pollution control project, and an environmental monitoring project.
