Offshore Wave Energy Test Proves Slow Mill Technology

Slow Mill has announced that they have surpassed a significant milestone by generating electricity at sea with its scale wave energy device, making them the first Dutch company to have ever reached that in the North Sea. This result signals that with wave energy, the North Sea is the powerhouse for the energy transition, together with offshore wind.

Last week, technology developer Slow Mill tested their wave energy converter against the North Sea waves off the coast of Scheveningen, The Hague. Its unique approach with patented technology provides for high production in relatively moderate waves, something that other wave energy companies haven’t been able to accomplish.

CEO Erwin Meijboom: “This offshore test was crucial for us. After 6 years of development, we have finally proven that our technology works. It was a fascinating moment. I can’t stress how important this is for the Dutch wave energy industry. Now, the road is open to further scaling up. A wave energy farm combined with an offshore wind farm is our next milestone. We believe that in 2032, we can provide for 10% of the Dutch offshore energy ambition.”

Wave energy is a continuous, reliable, and abundant energy resource that can complement wind and solar energy as a third main resource. When there is no wind or sunshine, energy is still needed, and wave energy can provide it.
