In his inaugural speech on 26 March, Professor de Mora emphasized the urgent need for a multidisciplinary approach across the marine sector. “I am committed to using my term as IMarEST president to foster collaboration and drive innovation within our sector,” said Professor de Mora.
A primary focus of the new President will be to enhance IMarEST’s technical voice and increase its representation.
“The world’s oceans are in crisis, and the IMarEST is uniquely positioned to bring together global experts in engineering, science, and technology to create integrated solutions for the marine environment,” said Professor de Mora. “However, we need more scientists to join the conversation, as well as individuals from diverse backgrounds and those at the beginning of their careers.”
Professor de Mora is the former Chief Executive of the world-renowned Plymouth Marine Laboratory in the UK. His areas of research include environmental analytical chemistry, marine pollution monitoring and assessment, chemical oceanography, biogeochemistry, and polar science. He has undertaken research missions at sea and in both the Arctic region and Antarctica.
Chris Goldsworthy, CEO of IMarEST, said: “Professor de Mora’s appointment is a significant milestone for IMarEST. His scientific expertise will undoubtedly enhance our membership offerings and representation in this area, and we look forward to the opportunities his leadership will bring.”
The Institute also welcomed Professor Deborah Greaves OBE, an expert in ocean engineering, as President Elect at its AGM. The presidential team is now made up of the current president, Professor de Mora, immediate past President, Yves de Leener, and President Elect, Professor Greaves. Together, they will lead the Institute and represent IMarEST on the global stage.
