The event created an opportunity to exchange knowledge on how Nortek technologies can support scientific research in Peru, while giving participants the chance to explore the capabilities of vessel-mounted acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) systems for both coastal and ocean applications.
Supporting Scientific Understanding through Knowledge Exchange
The workshop began with technical presentations led by Nortek’s Alex Lobos, covering the capabilities of Signature and Aquadopp ADCP systems and their use in scientific applications.
The discussions extended beyond the technology itself to some of the ongoing projects IMARPE is currently working on. Participants discussed common challenges with sensor integration on vessels and shared solutions, ideas, and best practices.
These discussions are especially relevant as IMARPE develops its new research vessel, Santander. The vessel is intended to become a new scientific platform for research related to marine resources and climate change.
The workshop gave the Nortek and IMARPE teams an opportunity to discuss how vessel-mounted current measurements could support future research and how systems such as the VM Ocean could potentially fit within increasingly complex scientific vessel configurations.
Taking VM Coastal onto the Water
The second day moved from presentations to practical experience, with Nortek’s Pedro Pacheco leading an on-vessel demonstration of the VM Coastal system, followed by a session on VM data processing.

Together with participants from IMARPE and the Peruvian Navy, the team carried out current and discharge measurements, allowing attendees to experience the VM workflow firsthand.
The demonstration was one of the highlights of the workshop, showcasing the straightforward operation of the system and providing the opportunity to see how vessel-mounted measurements could be incorporated into participants’ own work.
The on-water session was made possible with support from CANOPUS GROUP, an engineering services company working with ports in Peru and a long-standing Nortek user. CANOPUS was the first company to acquire a Nortek VM system in Peru and has used the technology in studies supporting the Port of Chancay.
For the workshop, CANOPUS provided both its survey vessel and VM Coastal system, making it possible for participants to move from technical discussion to practical measurement on the water.

Building Stronger Local Connections in Peru
The workshop also reinforced the importance of Nortek’s growing presence in South America.
Discussions with IMARPE and the National Hydrographic Directorate highlighted the value of having technical expertise available within the region. Local support and the ability to communicate in Spanish can make it easier to discuss technical challenges, identify suitable approaches, and maintain close collaboration as research requirements evolve.
The engagement is particularly significant because IMARPE and the National Hydrographic Directorate are two important stakeholders in Peru’s oceanographic community, with responsibility for major scientific and hydrographic activities in the country.
By bringing technical discussions, knowledge exchange, and hands-on experience together, the Nortek VM Workshop Peru 2026 provided a foundation for continued collaboration with both organizations, including potential opportunities to support IMARPE as it develops Santander and its future ocean research capabilities.
