TKMS ATLAS UK Wins Royal Navy Next Generation Countermeasure Contract

TKMS ATLAS UK, a subsidiary of TKMS, has been awarded the UK Ministry of Defence's (MOD) Next Generation Countermeasure (NGCM) contract, a key element of the Royal Navy's Underwater Defensive Aids Suite program.

The NGCM program will deliver a next-generation torpedo countermeasure system for current and future Royal Navy submarine platforms. Designed to address evolving and emerging underwater threats, the system will adopt a spiral development approach to ensure long-term operational relevance and adaptability.

In delivering the program, TKMS ATLAS UK will leverage its deep expertise across hydro-acoustics, sonar systems, underwater communications, sensor engineering, and systems integration, as well as its long-established torpedo countermeasure research capabilities. The parties have agreed not to disclose the contract value.

Dr. Antoni Mazur, Managing Director at TKMS ATLAS UK, said: “We are extremely proud to have been selected to deliver the Next Generation Countermeasure capability for the Royal Navy. This contract reflects our longstanding role as the UK’s trusted provider of torpedo countermeasure research and development, and a trusted partner of innovation in the underwater battlespace. NGCM will deliver a world-class capability that strengthens the underwater defense of the UK’s submarine fleet, while also creating opportunities for future growth and export.”

Chris Bamforth, Head of Submarine Combat Systems in the MOD, added: “I wish to congratulate TKMS ATLAS UK on winning the Next Generation Countermeasure (NGCM) contract and look forward to working closely with them as we deliver this essential capability for the UK submarine fleet.”

TKMS ATLAS UK will work closely with Babcock International Group (Babcock), with the defense company bringing its proven capabilities in the field of countermeasure launcher technology and extensive knowledge of platform integration onboard existing platforms, including its long-established through-life support for the UK submarine fleet. The solution has been engineered to enhance platform availability while enabling future capability upgrades, representing a significant step forward in underwater survivability for the Royal Navy’s submarine fleet.

Phil Craig, Managing Director of Marine Programmes at Babcock, said: “Having a world-class underwater countermeasure solution that will help to protect our national interests is a real driver for us all. Babcock is pleased to be partnering with TKMS ATLAS UK, bringing together our complementary skills and expertise to deliver the most capable NGCM solution for the Royal Navy. We are committed to a partnership focused on developing innovative solutions that support UK defense and one that builds on more than three years of joint research and development ahead of the award.”

This award reinforces TKMS ATLAS UK’s commitment to supporting the Royal Navy, strengthening sovereign defense capability, and contributing to the security of the North Atlantic.

Looking ahead, the NGCM program will focus on delivery, integration, and progressive capability enhancements, ensuring that the Royal Navy remains equipped to counter emerging underwater threats across the lifecycle of its submarine platforms.
