Over several days, helicopters from the US Coast Guard (USCG) landed on Trent‘s flight deck to practice aviation operations, communications procedures, and maritime coordination.
The training provided an opportunity for both services to strengthen their ability to operate seamlessly together during maritime security, disaster relief, and law enforcement missions.
Executive officer of HMS Trent, Lieutenant Commander Charles Stevenson, said: “This aviation training ensures that Trent remains at high readiness for a range of tasking in the region and keeps us current with operating aircraft from our flight deck.
“Just as importantly, it represents part of our wider program of engagement and operational activity, which regularly includes working alongside international allies and partners: ensuring forces can integrate effectively during multinational operations.”
During the exercise, HMS Trent‘s ship’s company worked closely with the USCG helicopters on a range of training serials designed to enhance operational effectiveness.
The activity highlighted the professionalism and expertise of both crews while supporting shared objectives in maritime security and stability.
HMS Trent‘s flight deck provides a valuable maritime ‘lily pad’ capability, enabling helicopters to land, refuel, and return quickly to operations without the need to recover to a shore base.
This extends the range, endurance, and flexibility of both military and partner nation aircraft, allowing them to maintain a sustained presence over maritime areas.
By acting as a forward refueling platform, HMS Trent can support a wide range of missions, including maritime security patrols, counter-narcotics activities, and humanitarian assistance tasks.
The capability also enhances our ability to work with allied forces, enabling helicopters from partner nations, such as the United States Coast Guard, to flawlessly integrate with Royal Navy operations while operating far from land.
HMS Trent is stationed in the Caribbean during the region’s hurricane season, poised to support island communities in the event of a storm.
