Vice Admiral Dr. Purwanto was presented with the award by Rear Admiral Angus Essenhigh OBE, the UK’s National Hydrographer and the UKHO’s Director of Data Acquisition and Defense, on Monday, October 12. It was awarded ahead of the 10th International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) Council meeting, which begins in Monaco on Tuesday, October 13.

The awarding committee recognized Vice Admiral Dr. Purwanto’s leadership, dedication, and ongoing contribution in advancing hydrography, cartography, and navigational safety, both within Indonesia and across the wider region. Under his leadership, Pushidrosal has modernized Indonesia’s hydrographic capabilities, and continues to provide and maintain high-quality nautical charts and maritime geospatial information to support safe navigation and national maritime interests.

Vice Admiral Dr. Purwanto is an active member of the East Asia Hydrographic Commission (EAHC), where he has worked to strengthen regional collaboration in hydrography. He has also played a leading role in advancing the adoption of modern IHO standards, including the development of the S-100 data framework and testing the standards in S-100 Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS) trials in the Strait of Malacca and the Strait of Singapore.

Rear Admiral Angus Essenhigh OBE, UK National Hydrographer and Director of Data Acquisition and Defense at the UKHO, said: “Vice Admiral Dr. Budi Purwanto’s outstanding contribution to hydrography has had a significant and lasting impact on maritime safety, not only in Indonesia but across the wider international community. Vice Admiral Dr. Budi Purwanto added: “The Alexander Dalrymple Award is a humbling recognition of Indonesia’s contribution to global hydrography and international collaboration. I am honored that this award reflects our shared vision in strengthening maritime safety and innovation. I sincerely appreciate the UK Hydrographic Office for this recognition, which motivates Pushidrosal to continue advancing hydrographic standards and cooperation for safer seas worldwide.”

The Alexander Dalrymple Award has been presented annually since 2006 by the UKHO. Named in honor of the inaugural Hydrographer of the British Admiralty, the award acknowledges exceptional contributions to the field of hydrography. Recipients of the award are selected by the UKHO’s Executive Committee for their dedication to furthering hydrography, cartography, and navigation standards worldwide.
